Self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo method: Application to Cu(111)

چکیده
We present a method of performing kinetic Monte Carlo simulations that does not require an a priori list of diffusion processes and their associated energetics and reaction rates. Rather, at any time during the simulation, energetics for all possible singleor multiatom processes, within a specific interaction range, are either computed accurately using a saddle-point search procedure, or retrieved from a database in which previously encountered processes are stored. This self-learning procedure enhances the speed of the simulations along with a substantial gain in reliability because of the inclusion of many-particle processes. Accompanying results from the application of the method to the case of two-dimensional Cu adatom-cluster diffusion and coalescence on Cu 111 with detailed statistics of involved atomistic processes and contributing diffusion coefficients attest to the suitability of the method for the purpose.

Off-lattice self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo: application to 2D cluster diffusion on the fcc(111) surface.
We report developments of the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method with improved accuracy and increased versatility for the description of atomic diffusivity on metal surfaces. The on-lattice constraint built into our recently proposed self-learning KMC (SLKMC) (Trushin et al 2005 Phys. Rev. B 72 115401) is released, leaving atoms free to occupy 'off-lattice' positions to accommodate several proces...

We report the development of a pattern-recognition scheme for the off-lattice self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method, one that is simple and flexible enough that it can be applied to all types of surfaces. In this scheme, to uniquely identify the local environment and associated processes involving three-dimensional (3D) motion of an atom or atoms, space around a central atom is divided...
متن کاملDiffusion of small two-dimensional Cu islands on Cu(111) studied with a kinetic Monte Carlo method
Diffusion of small two-dimensional Cu islands containing up to 10 atoms on Cu 111 has been studied using the newly developed self-learning Kinetic Monte Carlo SLKMC method which is based on a database of diffusion processes and their energetics accumulated automatically during the implementation of the SLKMC code. Results obtained from simulations in which atoms hop from one fcc hollow site to ...
متن کاملA three-dimensional self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo model: application to Ag(111).
The reliability of kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations depends on accurate transition rates. The self-learning KMC method (Trushin et al 2005 Phys. Rev. B 72 115401) combines the accuracy of rates calculated from a realistic potential with the efficiency of a rate catalog, using a pattern recognition scheme. This work expands the original two-dimensional method to three dimensions. The concom...

A self-consistent rate-equation approach to the study of transitions in the critical island size i in submonolayer growth from i51 to i52 and from i51 to i53, corresponding to homoepitaxial growth on metal ~111! and ~100! surfaces, is presented. In contrast to previous standard rate-equation results, the average island density and monomer density are well predicted along with the transition tem...
